Synopsis
THE USES OF ADVERSITY illuminates the historic changes that came about in Central Europe during the 1980s. Travelling behind the iron curtain, talking to dissidents and ordinary people, Garton Ash discovered the subterranean movements that were to erupt so spectacularly in 1989. Dodging the secret police, he visits the Czech opposition leader Vaclav Havel. In Poland, he witnesses the Pope's great transforming visit to his native land. Longer essays analyse 'the power of the powerless' and detect the emergence of a new Central Europe behind the rusting facade of the old Eastern Europe.

About the Author
Timothy Garton Ash is a Fellow of St. Antony's College , Oxford. He is the author of THE FILE and HISTORY OF THE PRESENT, as well as his trilogy of the collapse of Soviet rule in Central Europe and its aftermath, THE POLISH REVOLUTION, WE THE PEOPLEand THE USES OF ADVERSITY (all three are being re-issued simultaneously).
