The novella GOODBYE, COLUMBUS centres on the relationship between Neil Klugman, a poor Jewish librarian, and the very spoilt, precocious Brenda Patimkin, a Radcliffe girl from a noveau riche family. Throughout one summer they swim, argue, eat and make love, largely under the Patimkin roof, until their cultural differences present obstacles too difficult to overcome.
