Synopsis

The people of Old Swithinford have plenty to be happy and content about. In fact, they may all be rather too complacent to realize what challenges lie in wait for them. William is finding his project of turning the old manuscript, found in the church, into a novel more difficult than he expected. Only he is aware of the secrets it contains, but first he must prove its authenticity. Meanwhile, life in the village goes on. The Bridgefoots are coming up to their Golden Wedding, but things begin to go wrong as the celebrations are planned. There is unrest troubling the whole community, but it is Eric Choppen who sniffs out the real danger to Old Swithinford and leads the village's resistance to the encroaching tide of urbanization.
