David Wheeler traces the history of garden design, then brings us an exquisite collection of the characters who have peopled our gardens through the ages. A glorious ragbag of notions, ideas, controversy and creative impulses that reflects that massive sweep of the age-old and continuing struggle that every gardener experiences in striving to create a temporary version of paradise. The book brings together a rich mix of garden writers through the centures as well as writers of prose, poetry, drama etc who have described the elements of gardens and garden-making.
