Synopsis
The Twenty-five years between the birth and accession of Elizabeth Tudor were England's years of crisis: rapid religious changes, inflation, rebellion. Here the effects are shown on Elizabeth's personal and political outlook and on her changing attitude to marriage, religion, foreign policy and Parliament. When she is queen and as the reign advances to its great test of the Spanish Armada, Elizabeth is faced with acute problems of religion, war and finance; and in this context there is a re-assessment of her as a statesman. The book discusses also her great contemporaries, including Burghley, Essex, Drake and Philip II, as well as the social and cultural background of the age.
