DEIRDRE CASH (writing as Criena Rohan) was born in Melbourne in 1924. Her first novel, The Delinquents, was written when the author was hospitalized for four months with suspected tuberculosis. The novel was published in London in 1962, to acclaim. It was made into a cult film, starring Kylie Minogue, in 1989.
Eventually diagnosed with cancer, Cash wrote her second novel, Down by the Dockside (1963), while in and out of hospital. Deirdre Cash died in Melbourne in 1963, aged thirty-eight.
