"In his earlier work Laing guided the reader to understanding. In Knots he compels him to experience.... To grasp this dense and difficult book one must be willing to follow Laing in his spirals of descent. If Knots is to yield, one must yield to the knots."
-- James S. Gordon, The New York Times Book Review "Dr. Laing's gentle determination to unpeel the bottom motive, the most inward secret of the heart, produces a curious combination of intensity and compassion....The heartbreaking ironies...belong to an artist rather than a psychiatrist.... "The voices of known demons rise from these pages: demons of guilt, demons of self-justification; demons of perverse will, demons of self-destruction. All the enemies of the human spirit are arrayed here as vividly, as warningly as in a medieval morality play. Those who believe that to unmask the enemy is a first step toward confounding him will find this a practical as well as a moral book." -- Melvin Maddocks, The Christian Science MonitorR. D. Laing was a Scottish psychiatrist who wrote extensively on mental illness - in particular, the experience of psychosis. Laing's views on the causes and treatment of serious mental dysfunction, greatly influenced by existential philosophy, ran counter to the psychiatric orthodoxy of the day by taking the expressed feelings of the individual patient or client as valid descriptions of lived experience rather than simply as symptoms of some separate or underlying disorder. Laing studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. He died in 1989,

Paperback. Condition: Good. There are books that aim to clarify, and then there are books that take clarity, fold it neatly in half, tie it into a loop, and hand it back to you with the suggestion that you might like to have another look. Knots (1973) by R.D. Laing, published by Penguin Books, belongs enthusiastically to the latter category: a slim, deceptively simple volume that manages to complicate the act of thinking in a way that feels both deliberate and oddly familiar. Laing, writing at the intersection of psychiatry, philosophy, and something that might best be described as observational mischief, presents a series of short pieces that examine the tangled nature of human relationships and thought. These are not poems in the conventional sense, nor are they straightforward prose. Instead, they are verbal constructions?loops, reversals, contradictions?that mimic the patterns people fall into when attempting to understand one another, or indeed themselves. What begins as a simple statement can quickly become something else entirely. A line repeats, shifts, doubles back, and before long the reader finds themselves following a thread that seems perfectly logical until it isn?t. The effect is less like being told something and more like recognising something, often with a slight sense of unease. It is, after all, not entirely comfortable to see one?s own habits of thought reflected back in this way. Published in 1973, this Penguin edition has the familiar, understated design of the period?practical, portable, and entirely unconcerned with whether the contents might be considered straightforward. This particular copy is listed as Good , which in Crappy Old Books terms suggests it has been opened, handled, and perhaps read in moments of curiosity or quiet introspection. The cover may show some wear, the spine may have softened, and the pages may carry the faint traces of previous readers who may have paused, reconsidered, and then read the same passage again, just to be sure. It is not a book that demands a linear reading. In fact, it actively resists it. More likely, it will be dipped into, revisited, and occasionally set aside when a particular sequence becomes just a little too circular. Whether you approach it out of psychological interest, literary curiosity, or simply the sense that it might explain something about the way conversations tend to go wrong, it offers an experience that is less about answers and more about patterns. A compact, quietly disorienting work that turns language into a mirror of thought, and a perfectly respectable way to suggest that your reading habits extend into territory where meaning is not always straightforward, and where the knots, once noticed, are rather difficult to ignore.
