PROPERTY LAW

'Understanding Property Law' provides the background to an area of English law which students have found particularly difficult. Originally constructed piecemeal by lawyers over the years, the law today is expressed in complex language owing much to objectives and problems from a forgotten past. The authors of this book however stand back from their subject and stress the practical character of property law, emphasizing the role of lawyers in the diverse transactions – such as sale, gift and inheritance – in which their clients become involved. The focus upon the work which lawyers do in their offices provides a necessary complement to the treatment of legislation and judicial activity found in most textbooks. In this book, English property law is revealed as a many-layered text, built up over long periods of time, and properly understood only in the light of the meanings attached to each of these layers in the past. It is a stimulating approach which makes comprehensible a subject that has often seemed obscure.
