Brian Aldiss, OBE, is a fiction and science fiction writer, poet, playwright, critic, memoirist and artist. He was born in Norfolk in 1925. After leaving the army, Aldiss worked as a bookseller, which provided the setting for his first book, The Brightfount Diaries (1955). His first published science fiction work was the story ‘Criminal Record’, which appeared in Science Fantasy in 1954. Since then he has written nearly 100 books and over 300 short stories.
Four people are killed by an IRA bomb in a Great Yarmouth hotel in the mid-Eighties. Five years later an American academic sets out to test his theory that their deaths were not random but in some way pre-ordained. As he traces the chains of circumstance that brought together such a disparate group of people – a Russian-born yuppie, an impoverished Norfolk family who missed out on the Eighties boom and a Czech dissident film director – an intriguing and disturbing picture begins to emerge.
It was a small bomb in a small hotel, but the conceptual canvas of 'Remembrance Day' is a large one. By turns comic and sad, in true Aldiss fashion, and operating on a deceptively domestic scale, its cameos of the nature of disaster reflect global concerns.
'A crisply philosophical novel on the topic of disaster … poignant observations on failure and excess … Aldiss creates beguiling vignettes on the tragedy of modern life. Good stuff, guaranteed to stimulate grey matter'
DAILY EXPRESS
'Aldiss explores the large themes of fate, international terrorism and the existence of God in an energetic prose style that manages to be both bristling and reflective'
INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
'Moving, thoroughly absorbing and convincing. As a thoughtful tale of the surpassing strangeness beneath the obvious surface of contemporary life, this is a compelling novel'
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
'A tale of international significance. The counterpoint of humour and sadness, the straightforward writing, are hallmarks of this master storyteller'
