Bob Garratt is editor of the Successful Manager and Strategist series and author of ‘The Learning Organization’, ‘Learning to Lead’ and ‘The Fish Rots from the Head’. He has worked in many European countries, the USA, Australia and New Zealand and has been developing management education in China and Hong Kong since 1976. He lives in north London.
'Developing Strategic Thoughts' addresses the fundamental roles of chairman, directors and presidents in directing the organisation through a learning process – called strategic thought.
Creating the future of your organisation requires an imaginative brain and a capacity to take strategic decisions in times of uncertainty. Direction-givers need to rise above purely analytical planning and learn the art of synthesising the messy, turbulent and fuzzy-edged information to hand so that they can develop a range of possible directions for an effective future.
Edited by Bob Garratt, a leading contributor to the development of strategic thinking, this collection of pioneering essays by acknowledged leaders in business and strategic thought illustrates the necessity and the advantages of using strategic thinking, how this differs from strategic planning, and offers guidance on how to develop the skills and attitudes required.
It includes:
• Stimulating ideas for those charged with creating the future of their organisation
• The first comprehensive mapping of strategic thinking rather than strategic planning
• Practical examples of ways to develop strategic thought for individuals and boards of directors
• New structures and processes for organisations as they enter the 21st century
'Bob Garratt has drawn his team of contributors from among the liveliest minds at work today in the field of strategic thought. The result is a stimulating volume of essays, rich with insight and wisdom, that senior executives will find of great practical value'
PHILIP SALDER,' Vice President, Ashridge Management College'
