Ce � 89 � arabe, qui �voque tout autant le 1989 europ�en de la chute du mur de Berlin que le 1789 de la R�volution fran�aise, �branle en profondeur les soci�t�s et touche �galement les pays europ�ens. L'analyser, l'expliquer, en �valuer la port�e, est la raison d'�tre de ce dialogue entre un journaliste, Edwy Plenel, et un historien, Benjamin Stora. La confrontation entre les interrogations du pr�sent, dont t�moigne le premier, et la connaissance du pass�, que d�tient le second, est particuli�rement �clairante. Elle permet de saisir � la fois ce qu'il y a d'impr�visible, d'inventif, d'in�dit dans le soul�vement des peuples et les faits oubli�s ou les exp�riences meurtries dont il est p�tri.
Au-del� de leurs m�tiers et int�r�ts respectifs, une longue complicit� amicale et intellectuelle rapproche les auteurs et anime leur conversation. Elle est li�e � des parcours sinon communs, du moins voisins. Benjamin Stora est n� en Alg�rie, qu'il a d� quitter en 1962, tandis que Edwy Plenel y a v�cu apr�s l'ind�pendance. Tous deux ont plac� la question coloniale, l'actualit� de son pass� et la critique de ses h�ritages au coeur d'engagements de jeunesse qu'ils ne renient pas et qui ont en partie faits ce qu'ils sont devenus. Tous deux sont concern�s, inform�s et leur souci de comprendre est aussi l'expression d'une vive empathie envers ces r�volutions porteuses d'esp�rance.
