Richard Hey (1745 - 1835) was born in Leeds and educated at Cambridge. In 1771 he was called to the bar at the Middle Temple and took the degree of LL. D. in 1778. He did not succeed as a barrister, however, so he retired from the bar. He was a Fellow and tutor of Sidney Sussex College until 1778 and then of Magdalene College from 1782 to 1796. In 1782 some gentleman offered anonymously, through the University of Cambridge, to give a prize of fifty guineas for the best "Dissertation on the Pernicious Effects of Gaming". Richard Hey obtained the prize and the work was published in 1783, with a second and a third edition. The same gentleman offered a similar sum of fifty guineas, in the year following for the best "Dissertation on Duelling", and a third time for the best"Dissertation on Suicide". Richard Hey won both of those prizes and both dissertations were published, the one in 1784 and the other in 1785, with a second edition in 1812 when the three dissertations were published in one volume. In 1792 he wrote an article "Answer to Paine's Rights of Man" in which Ôhe demonstrates the system of that arch-theorist to be a system of despotism and tyranny. He entitled this useful publication "Happiness and Rights".'. [Taylor, The biographia Leodiensis; or, Biographical sketches of the worthies of Leeds . pp. 363-365].
