This volume presents 50 literary critiques intended to clarify the connection between work, impact, and scholarship. The principles of contemporary literary criticism are clarified: Appropriate literary criticism should always examine its own standpoint in its psychological, biographical, social, and cultural context, and disclose it whenever and wherever possible. In this sense, literary criticism has a political, i.e., socially critical, effect, including its didactic, sanctioning function for literary producers and recipients. Most critiques, as is the case here, both in literary history and today, tend to transcend their subject matter and thus exert a political, social, and cultural impact.V & R Unipress GmbH, Robert-Bosch-Breite 6, 37079 Göttingen 221 pp. Deutsch. …
