Paperback. Thirty-one years ago, a door was torn between two worlds. Two hundred and nineteen people fell through it, strangers stepping out of the light into a life that was never meant to be theirs. They have grown old in a world not their own. They have not been replaced. And the door they came through has never truly closed. Now the seam between the worlds is failing. The people who came through are holding it open simply by being alive, and the only way to close it, to save every life on both sides, asks a price no community should ever have to weigh: one person must walk back into the gap, and stay there. The arithmetic is simple. Deciding whose life it is has no answer that anyone can bear. The Weight of Mercy is a novel about love, arithmetic, and what mercy actually costs the people asked to pay it. For readers of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and the fiction of Ted Chiang, it asks how you hold a door shut when the far side has already taken everything from you.
