A world catstrophe can serve some. Also to find an alibi before God. Where were you, Adam? "I was in the World War." Theodor Haecker, "Day and Night Books", March 31, 1940
In his early novel, Heinrich Böll signs war as a disease. It is therefore only logical that he did not want to describe the mechanisms of a battle, but places the individual person in the foreground. Böll starts from the detail and opens the view of the whole. He draws his figures, landsers and generals, SS leaders and rushed Jews, women and girls in the hinterland, without distorting or idealizing.
Many books have been written against the war. But not all were understood that way. Unintentionally, they allowed a remnant of meaning or even a fascination with the horror and the destructive violence of war. Böll's novel is unmistakable. For example, the story of a guard command at a bridge blown up by partisans and rebuilt by the Germans to be blown up again in front of the approaching Russians makes the organised futility of war clearer than any grisly battle panorama.
