She then forged a new life in Canada. Daughter Irene Riznek (Koenigsberger) was born in Germany and came to Canada as a child. She prepared this autobiography based on historical certificates, documents and Annenpas records, and on her mother's notes and their many conversations.
"Enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Fascinating to read what it was like for a child growing up in Hitler's Germany. The author writes well and she has certainly lived an interesting life! Definitely worth a read if you like autobiography." - Steve (Goodreads)
"This is a very nice book written from the perspective of someone who grew up in Germany and experienced the war and all its consequences. Although I expected more of an insight into the politics of that time, I was pleasantly surprised to read a warm story about a very strong and determined woman who went through so much to finally find peace in Canada. I very much enjoyed reading about things I've only sporadically heard about, in particular since the main focus of this book are ordinary German people whose destiny was shaped by other people's decisions, even in a single city such as Berlin where people found themselves divided in opposite parts of the town and had to be very creative to make their lives tolerable. So many nice stories resulted from this and thanks to this book some will be saved forever.
It should also be noted that all memories are wonderfully transformed into words in a very readable manner, with lots of nice digressions. A book to recommend!" - Mrvica (Goodreads)
"I loved this book. I read it in one day. It's a fascinating look into a German woman's childhood, war time experiences, and then immigrating to Canada. Through trials and tribulations, Dorthea Gutzeit kept her head up and prevailed. This book is a revealing story of how life was a struggle for average Germans from the 1920s-1940s. Too many of these stories are being lost as that generation fades, but thankfully this one was preserved amd shared." Janylin (Goodreads)
"This book is interesting and informative because we seldom see war from the perspective of an ordinary individual struggling to survive the turmoil, especially one whose native country is Germany. It is also a charming story with its vignettes of a happier childhood and simple pleasures. A continuous theme throughout the book is Dorothea's abiding love for animals, and many of the humorous anecdotes relate to her various “pets”. Be True and Serve will appeal to readers of non-fiction, autobiography, and history, as well as to those who are looking for a well-told story and satisfying read." - Lynn (Goodreads)
