Paperback. UN COUP D'OEIL HISTORIQUE. A proprement parler, le telephone n'est qu'un instrument apte a transmettre les sons a distance, et l'idee de cette transmission est aussi ancienne que le monde. Les Grecs employaient des moyens susceptibles de la realiser, et il n'est pas douteux que ces moyens n'aient ete quelquefois mis a contribution dans les oracles du paganisme. Seulement cette transmission des sons ne sortait pas de certaines limites assez restreintes, ne depassant pas sans doute celles des porte-voix. Suivant M. Preece, le document le plus ancien ou cette transmission du son a distance soit formulee d'une maniere un peu nette, remonte a l'annee 1667, comme il resulte d'un ecrit d'un certain Robert Hooke, qui dit a ce propos: Il n'est pas impossible d'entendre un bruit a grande distance, car on y est deja parvenu, et l'on pourrait meme decupler cette distance sans qu'on puisse taxer la chose d'impossible. Bien que certains auteurs estimes aient affirme qu'il etait impossible d'entendre a travers une plaque de verre noircie meme tres-mince, je connais un moyen facile de faire entendre la parole a travers un mur d'une grande epaisseur. On n'a pas encore examine a fond jusqu'ou pouvaient atteindre les moyens acoustiques, ni comment on pourrait impressionner l'ouie par l'intermediaire d'autres milieux que l'air, et je puis affirmer qu'en employant un fil tendu, j'ai pu transmettre instantanement le son a une grande distance et avec une vitesse sinon aussi rapide que celle de la lumiere, du moins incomparablement plus grande que celle du son dans l'air. Cette transmission peut etre effectuee non-seulement avec le fil tendu en ligne droite, mais encore quand ce fil presente plusieurs coudes. Ce systeme de transmission des sons, sur lequel sont bases les telephones a ficelle qui attirent l'attention depuis quelques annees, est reste a l'etat de simple experience jusqu'en 1819, epoque a laquelle M. Wheatstone l'appliqua a sa lyre magique. Theodose Achille Louis vicomte du Moncel, ne le 6 mars 1821 a Paris ou il est mort le 16 fevrier 1884, est un scientifique francais. Issu d'une grande famille noble normande, il est le fils du comte Alexandre du Moncel, general du genie et pair de France, qui possedait a Martinvast (Manche) une ferme modele. Jeune, il part visiter les sites archeologiques grecs et couvre ses besoins par la vente de ses croquis. De retour a Paris, il s'interesse a la science, particulierement a l'electricite. Il obtient le poste d'ingenieur-electricien de l'Administration des lignes telegraphiques francaises. Il est elu membre de l'Academie des sciences le 21 decembre 1874. Il fonde avec Emmanuel Liais et Auguste Le Jolis, la Societe nationale des sciences naturelles et mathematiques de Cherbourg en 1851. A la suite de son pere, il est elu conseiller general de la Manche (Canton d'Octeville) de 1861 et 1870. Il epouse Camille, l'une des cinq filles du comte Camille de Montalivet. Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to CitiRetail, Stevenage, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
