FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. 8 vo. Stiff marbled wrappers with paper label on cover, antique style. 92 pp. One-hundred woodcuts in the text, including two full-page. A very good copy. First appearing at London in 1834, the American edition, illustrated with woodcuts by Neville Johnson of Philadelphia, was published to fill a need for a work in a department of surgery ".too long neglected in this country." (Preface). Thomas Cutler, M.D. (1810-79) identifies himself on the title as late staff-surgeon in the Belgian Army. Heirs of Hippocrates 1705 notes that A.S. Doane drew on Cutler's 'Surgeon's practical guide' for his sourcebook on surgery, 'Surgery illustrated', New York, 1836. Orr 779 - the present edition. Wellcome II.423 - second edition, London, 1836 only. Blocker Coll., p.97 - first edition. Not in Cordasco. Bound with: Horner, W.E.
