Item description from seller

The structure of the capsule of Urosalpinx is described and discussed in relation to the normal hatching process. Experiments have shown that development and the hatching process are inhibited at a temperature of 5?C, but only the egg stage is killed at this temperature. Normal hatching appears to result from the liberation of some enzyme-like substance which dissolves the cementing attachment of the operculum. It is suggested that capsules found ready to hatch before the normal spawning season were deposited at the beginning of the previous winter and have survived winter temperatures in a state of inhibited development. 7 pp., 1 fig., br. gr. 8.
