4 page letter signed very affectionately to "My best and kindest friend" Helen Holbeche of Sutton Coldfield. Addressed from his home in London "Old Broad St, E.C. dated 1st march 1882. He describes not liking painting portraits. "I am sorry to say I have been compelled to devote myself almost entirely to portrait painting a branch of art I very much dislike".I feel that to paint a portrait it is absolutely necessary to follow truth as closely as possible, that is to say you must paint that which is defective as well as that which is beautiful, there is no room for imagination".I have not forgotten the kindness I received at Reading. I do hope you will not forsake me for so long a timae again, but that i might hear from you very soon."is it possible for me to see you? I sometimes fear we shall never meet again, I sincerely hope this may not be, for i always think of you as my best and kindest friend". Seller Inventory # 7741
