300pp. Original publisher's purple cloth, printed paper lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed, spine sunned. Scattered spotting. Presentation copy, inked inscription to head of title: 'To Sir J. T. Coleridge Bart. / with The Author's Regards / Novr. 13. 1860.' This single poem epic fantasy, bleakly Dantean, was the first published poetry of English critic, journalist, poet and acquaintance of the Romantic circle John Abraham Heraud (1799-1887). The Chambers Cyclopedia of English Literature, perhaps rather too flatteringly, suggested that Heraud was to contemporary epic poetry what John Martin was to epic art: 'a worshipper of the vast, the remote, and the terrible'. John Taylor Coleridge (1790-1876), nephew of the Romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, judge, and sometime editor of the Quarterly Review. Size: 12mo.
