About this Item
viii, 192pp. With a half-title. Contemporary green morocco-backed vellum-tipped marbled paper boards, ruled and lettered in gilt to spine. Rubbed, spine dulled. Leaves browned and damp-stained. Presentation copy, inked inscription to FEP: 'Mr. Brown / from Dr. Peebles'. An inscribed copy of the second edition, printed in the year after the anonymous first issue, of a long poem on the French revolution by Church of Scotland clergyman William Peebles (1753-1826). The author is now chiefly remembered as a victim of Robert Burns' satirical poem 'The Kirk of Scotland's Garland' (1789), in which he is cast as 'Poet Willie' and immortalised with the line 'O'er Pegasus' side ye ne'er laid a stride / Ye only stood by where he sh--'. Demonstrating true Christian spirit, in 1811 Peebles attacked the deceased Burns - anonymously - in a ponderous polemic Burnomania; the celebrity of Robert Burns considered in a Discourse addressed to all real Christians of every Denomination, skewering the poet as a peddler of 'vile scraps of indecent ribaldry'. Jackson p.278. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ24569
