This collection of thirty fours photographs is evidence of the rampant earthly destruction caused by the hydraulic mines created to grasp gold. Each image adds context to the rise and fall of the Klondike Gold Rush. This collection of thirty-four photographs were made after the initial gold rush in Alaska and date from 1906-1909. Many of the photographs have the photographer’s name written within the negative, namely: Wolfe, Huey, Welden, and Dobbs. One photo is signed in pencil, "Tindall & Flynn." A glimpse at these images and you will see the depravity of done unto Alaskan Territory and its people at the turn of the last century. These photos focus our attention along the Fairbanks Trail, Ester Creek, Yukon Territory, and a look across the Behring Sea. Several images are identified including "Hydraulic mining Yukon cons’ Gold Fields," "Governor’s residence, Dawson, Yukon Territory, August 31, 1906," "A Klondike Home," etc. Along Ester Creek, there is a photograph of Chisholm and Webster Plant. In Yukon, the largest dump at Dominion Creek is captured standing tall beside men, women, and sled dogs. Out over the Behring Sea, the moonlight sparkles. Another photograph of two boys at a vegetable stand in Yukon, offers the caption "Land of Nightless Days". In 1909, a group posed for the camera. A caption states "first clean up - season 1909". This was along Ester Creek. A mountain of displaced dirt reigns high in the background, as well as piles of lumber, logs, and rubble. There are some images Native women, deemed "eskimos" are featured here. Also, men beside mammoth tusks larger than the men themselves. There is a group photo taken on an ice hummock on the Behring Sea. There is more that waits to be seen, this is only a glimpse. These photographs are contained in a three binder. On the cover reads: Wentworth Institute of Technology. Likely no correlation. Written in black sharpie: Photos of Yukon Gold Rush Alaska. Photos vary in size, 10" x 7 3/4", 10" x 8", 8 1/2" x 6 1/2", 7" x 5". Several photos have edge wear, some corner bends and small tears. Most are in good condition.…
