Signed by Claude Levi-Strauss on the half title, inscribed to former owner. 404 pp. + 48 pp. of photos. Bound in publisher's turquoise cloth with gilt spine lettering. First thus in America with this title; confusingly, the first American printing had the original French title Tristes Tropiques despite the 1961 British translation that it is from being entitled A World on the Wane; publisher mentions on copyright page that this and the first US printing are basically identical except for the title (and format and, of course, lack of statement of first edition). Two pages corner creased, else Fine in Very Good dust jacket with small chip at head, diagonal closed tear along back panel and rear flap ($12.50).
