The four page letter on is written on YMCA British Expeditionary Force letterhead and dated France, June 17th, and signed "Jack". The soldier describes his situation in France to his family in Opunake, including his off duty experience: "The NZs have had sports several times lately & Bat. & Div. horse shows. The last one was last Sunday & there was a great crowd there, we all marched there, about two miles & I met a good many chaps that I know from Opunake (.) way there." "I have not heard the joke about the Kaiser, but there are several new ones over here. A Tommy O. asked a Maori what he was doing here one day, & he said oh, putting up plenty barb wire to stop the German getting through & stop the Tommy's from running back." 2 pp, 5 x 8", on 4 sides.
