First and Fine is run by Dr Alexander Wochnik. He is a political scientist who lives in Birmingham, UK. First and Fine grew out of a passion for collectable books. Having collected modern first editions since 2008, Alex founded and launched First and Fine in 2016. The shop specialises in modern first editions, with a strong focus on 20th century fiction, as well as in fine editions such as limited Folio Society Editions. The qualities of research, diligence and thoroughness required in academia are useful in collecting books as well, and we hope you will be satisfied with the books he has sourced for you.
Many of the books offered here have been signed by their authors or artists and we take great care in making sure that the signatures are authentic. All books are sourced from a variety of reliable sources or signed by authors on our behalf at book festivals and other literary events. All books described as first editions are automatically first editions AND a first prints / printings unless specified otherwise.

Packaging
We wrap and pack our books carefully using plenty of bubble wrap and sturdy card board to ensure safe transit. We often use recycled packaging materials where appropriate and possible to reduce waste.
Out of Stock Books
In the event that a book is out of stock we will contact you immediately by email and, where possible, either offer an alternative, or, if not acceptable, offer a full refund.

Our books are shipped using recorded delivery within 2 to 5 working days. Domestic (UK) orders should generally be received within 7 working days, but please note that during busy times there may be a delay. Overseas orders are sent by recorded airmail and should be received within 7 to 15 working days depending on destination. Delivery charges are calculated by delivery location and the weight of the order. Please use the Contact Us page to let us know if you require faster or other special shipping services. All shipments are sent tracked and signed for.
