Washington Walked Here by Mollie Somerville. Washington, D.C.: National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), 1986 reprint of the 1970 original. Blue cloth with silver spine lettering; pp. 254. Includes numerous historical illustrations and an index. This copy is warmly inscribed and signed by the author on the title page, dated December 1995. The Bicentennial dust jacket reproduces Howard Chandler Christy's famous painting Signing of the Constitution and includes NSDAR commemorative labeling. This engaging regional history traces George Washington's deep connections to Alexandria, Virginia - where he surveyed as a young man, drilled troops, attended church, conducted business, and moved among neighbors who became central to early American civic life. Somerville chronicles the development of Alexandria from colonial settlement to a thriving 18th-century port, examining landowners, military activity, the tobacco economy, and Washington's daily routes through the town. Additional chapters profile Mount Vernon's surrounding estates, the establishment of the national capital, and local life at the century's close. Drawing on archival sources and written with clarity for general readers, the work remains a valued narrative of Washington's lived geography. Condition: Book Near Fine - clean, tight, and sharp, with bright endpapers and no internal markings beyond the author's inscription. Minimal shelf evidence. Dust jacket Very Good - still bright, but showing rubbing, edgewear, laminate creasing, and small closed tears at extremities; mild chipping at spine ends; not price-clipped. Edition/Printing: This is the 1986 NSDAR reprint, following earlier printings in 1970 and 1981, no additional printings listed, consistent with publisher practice for small-press institutional runs. Mollie Somerville (NSDAR) was a noted historian of Alexandria and Northern Virginia whose works focus on the early social, economic, and political landscapes that shaped Washington's world. Her accessible style and careful documentation made her writings popular among local historians and readers interested in Revolutionary-era sites. …
