About this Item
Octavo, green cloth lettered in gilt; top edge gilt. First edition, first printing. A quintessential presentation copy, inscribed: "To Dr. William H. Welch, from Howard A. Kelly, with affectionate regard, 16 June 06," on the front endpaper; Welch is mentioned in the preface and pages 63-67, 164, 249. ---- The recipient, William Henry Welch, a physician, pathologist, and educator, founded the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the country. He had an influential role in reforming medical education. One of the founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital along with Welch, Kelly created new surgical approaches to women's diseases and invented numerous medical devices, including the cystoscope. He was one of the first to use radium to treat cancer, founding the Kelly Clinic in Baltimore, one of the country's leading centers for radiation therapy at that time. Both Welch and Kelly worked closely with Walter Reed, the U.S. Army physician who in 1901 led the team that postulated and confirmed the theory that yellow fever is transmitted by a particular mosquito species, rather than by direct contact. In "Walter Reed," Welch praised Reed for the "inestimable benefits upon his country and mankind." A definitive study with a most distinguished provenance. Seller Inventory # ABE-16649208691
