About this Item
Size of paper sheet: 12 5/8 in. x 8 in., but the side edges have been folded over to form a smaller size; image size: 9 1/4 in. x 5 3/4 in. Possibly a trial form of an etching printed on a fairly thin paper and without any artist's name, titling, date, etc. added to the plate or plate margin. The scene features a young cow being measured by a man in Russian-style cap and boots, while two other figures, one holding a book or recording journal, and another, possibly, a veterinary doctor or assistant, is holding the animal's head. The artist, has inscribed and signed this in pencil, under the image: To Anne and Bill Targ - Oct. 2, 1935 [signed] John Groth. The paper has been cut down from a larger sheet, and the sides folded over, the surface shows some light dusting, age-related tanning to the paper margins. This appears to be a scene witnessed & drawn by Groth in the Soviet Union, during the 1930's, and later used as the source of the etching. We have not been able to trace where it was used as an illustration. From the collection of bookseller/publisher, William ("Bill") Targ, who was one of Groth's closest friends, and an early admirer of his work.
