11 volumes octavo 9 1/2 x 6 inches- handsomely leather bound in full blue morocco in 1883, spines gilt in compartments, boards, edges and turn-ins with a gilt roll tool, yellow endpapers, all edges gilt- WITH THE BOOKSELLERS INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BINDER in manuscript bound in volume four. Booksellers Baynes and Co dated 4th Jan 1883. Very unusual to find such instructions. See photo. First series in 6 volumes and 2nd series in 5 volumes. ILLUSTRATED WITH 733 FULL PAGE ENGRAVED PLATES- being 722 plates, 10 engraved titles and one engraved frontispiece (all tissue guarded) plus some vignettes in the text. The lists of plates enigmatically numbered in manuscript by an earlier collator and Baynes (some indexes signed in pencil Baynes). Some spotting and the occasional old damp spot, as usual. A handsome and apparently complete set of the plates- the plates in the second series slightly out of order. Text by Thomas Moule bound with an extensive list of subscribers. Seller Inventory # 6985
