Item description from seller

pp. 22-46. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Binding rubbed and bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, stamp on the back, otherwise clean. - From the text: We can claim to have learnt reasonably well how to detect forgeries of ancient texts made either in the Middle Ages or in the Renaissance or later. It is true that there will always be somebody ready to believe that Tacitus Annals and Histories were forged by Poggio Bracciolini; or vice versa that the Consolatio was written by Cicero and not in 1583. But generally speaking we know enough about transmission of texts, language and history to make it reasonably sure that a Greek or Latin prose composition of the fourteenth or sixteenth or nineteenth century will not be received as a historical document written any time between the fifth century B.C. and the fifth century A.D. - Wikipedia: Arnaldo Dante Momigliano (5 September 1908 1 September 1987) was an Italian historian of classical antiquity, known for his work in historiography, and characterised by Donald Kagan as "the world's leading student of the writing of history in the ancient world".
