The New York Times has called Tony Hillerman's mysteries some of the best and certainly the most unusual mystery novels of the lost few decades, and the Washington Post has said they are one of the consistently superior -- and definitely distinctive -- mystery series of the last 15 years. In A Thief of Time, Hillerman continues his long-standing tradition of unique, finely crafted mysteries. When a noted anthropologist arrives at on ancient Anasazi Indian ruin to dig for cloy pots, she is at first angry to discover that the pre-Navajo burial site has already been despoiled, then terrified by what looms out of the darkness. Weeks later, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, investigating a report to the Navajo Tribal Police that the anthropologist has been stealing precious artifacts, discovers she has also been reported as missing. The case turns sinister when Officer Jim Chee, on a routine senrrh for missing excavating equipment, finds more than he expected near a similar dig. Leaphorn joins forces with Chee to unearth the post and solve a bizarre and mystifying series of murders that seem to have only one thing in common-the beautiful and very valuable Anasazi pots. Tony Hillerman has been praised for his unequaled evocation of the American Southwest, his finely tuned aura of mystery, and his understanding of Navajo culture. A Thief of Time not only reinforces that claim, but surpasses it. It is a rich and evocative mystery and is, simply, Hillerman at his best.
