January 20, 1976., 1976. Fine. - Over 55 words typed on his personal 8-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide stationery with his facsimile signature embossed as letterhead. A brief letter by Carl Laemmle, Jr. addressed to his friend City Center producer Jean Dalrymple, thanking her for the plant and hoping she can use the plane ticket to come to his party which he's had to reschedule. "I got your plant. It is lovely." "Sorry I had to cancel the party but expect to have it in four or five weeks. Use the plane ticket to come out then." Apparently not feeling well, he apologizes "Sorry I can't write more but don't want to overdo it." Signed "Junior", his familiar name, in his shaky hand. Fine. The son of the Universal Studios founder of the same name, Carl Laemmle, Jr. was head of production from 1928 to 1936 in the early years of the "talkies". Although such pioneers as Georges Melies had produced horror films as early as the 1890's, Carl Laemmle, Jr. advanced the genre with such classic successes as "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "The Mummy", "The Invisible Man", "Bride of Frankentstein", etc. Despite these successes and others, such as "All Quiet On the Western Front", "East of Borneo", "The Old Dark House", "Imitation of Life", and "Showboat", Laemmle earned a reputation as spending too much on films that did not recoup their costs. Following a series of flops, Carl Laemmle Senior and Junior were forced to sell the company. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.…
