- Over 65 words typed on Van Rijn's personal 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide stationery with "J. Constant Van Rijn / Engineer / Woodstock, New York" embossed at top left. In his letter, addressed to the progressive educator Harold Rugg, van Rijn informs him that a mutual acquaintance F.L. Kunz will be giving a lecture at Onteora and offers to call on Rugg if the latter would be interested in going. Signed in full "J. Constant van Rijn". Folded for mailing with a couple of small chips and heavy creases to the bottom edge. Good. The Dutch engineer J. Constant van Rijn settled in Woodstock, New York as a refugee from WWII. He used a chicken coop as his office in 1947 and a barn for engineering work. Having incorporated the Rotron Manufacturing Company in 1949, by 1961 Van Rijn was employing many Woodstock artists to work in his new facility and commissioned their work for the company's lobby and offices.From 1947 on, Rotron provided reliable fans and blowers to the military and aerospace industries, developing a variety of innovative fans and air-movers. The company's products, used on aircraft and defense platforms worldwide, were designed to withstand shock, vibration, humidity, salt from sea-based operations, extreme temperatures, water and electromagnetic interference.One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg (1886-1960) was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education.
