About the Author: LAUREL BRAKE is Reader in Literature and Print Culture at Birkbeck College, She is the author of Subjugated Knowledges (1994) and Walter Pater (1994), and has co-edited Investigating Victorian Journalism (1990), Pater in the 1990s (1991) and The Endings of Epochs (1995). She has published articles and reviews on nineteenth-century literature, publishing and cultural theory.
