Item description from seller

GATES, Henry Louis, Jr. Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow. New York: Penguin Press, 2019. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Second printing of the first edition, inscribed on the title page in black ink "To Annmarie [?] / With Best Wishes" and signed by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The recipient's name is our best reading of the handwriting and is not certain. The inscription is written across the printed title page, around the title and the author's name. Please see the photograph. Gates's history of the century between emancipation and the civil rights movement: Reconstruction, the violent backlash that ended it, and the rise of Jim Crow, read through the racist imagery of the period and the "New Negro" answer to it. A New York Times bestseller. The copyright page reads "Copyright 2019 by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.," "Printed in the United States of America," and "Designed by Amanda Dewey," with the number line 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2, which makes this the second printing. The CIP data gives ISBN 9780525559535 (hardcover). The ink of the inscription shows faintly through to the copyright page on the verso of the title leaf. Hardcover in the publisher's white pictorial dust jacket with the silhouette design. The jacket is clean and bright, with a small patch of light gray scuffing at the head edge of the front panel near the corner. The spine panel is bright and unfaded, lettered "HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR. / STONY THE ROAD" with the Penguin Press device. The title page and copyright page are clean apart from the inscription. A near fine copy. Please see photographs. Shipped well packed. Ships from Massachusetts, USA.…
