Add to basketSigned by the author on the blank first front end paper ( 'Archibald Marshall in New York, September 8th, 1921'). The title page states 'With Illustrations From Photographs.' I counted 49 in total (including the Frontispiece) listed on the two Illustrations pages at the front of the book. All of the illustrations are full-page and in black and white. It would be nice if all books published around 1921 were in this kind of condition. Take a look at the photos. As you can see, the covers are very clean. The corners (with just the tiniest bit of rubbing) and edges are in excellent shape. The spine looks very good with just two small spots of rubbing at the top edge. The gilt lettering and design on the front cover is very bright. Quite bright on the spine as well. There is a light crease on the spine. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled. The book is perfectly square and very solidly bound from cover to cover (despite being a thick 332 pages). The pages are nicely tight. They are also exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them a number of times without finding any soiling. That includes the illustrations. I'm also not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no dogeared corners. There is a sliver of loss at the bottom corner of the title page, very far from the print. As I mentioned the middle page edge is rough-cut, and I think that little sliver was a victim of that process. Nevertheless in scrolling through I did not see a recurrence of any corner or edge losses. There are a two pages in the Index that were only partially cut., And two of the three rear blank end papers were uncut. I turned over a lot of pages in the text of the book and did not discover any that were uncut. There are no markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments. And with the exception of the author's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. This was a very early edition. The first was apparently published in 1920. My copy has 1921 on the title page, and as mentioned the author dated his signature in that same year. Arthur Hammond Marshall, better known by his pen name Archibald Marshall, was an English author, publisher and journalist whose novels were particularly popular in the United States. Educated at Cambridge University, he was later (in 1921) made an honorary Doctor of Letters by Yale University. He traveled widely and made numerous notable acquaintances. 'I was to walk through the country from the Italian border, but it rained so heavily on the first day that I went to Mentone and took the mountain tramway to Sospel, where in any case I had intended to spend the night. Two years ago, before this tram-line was quite finished, I motored up to Sospel to play golf. It was a pleasant experience, though not without its thrills, for the road zigzags and corkscrews up mountain sides and across deep gorges in a way to make one thankful for strong brakes and a reliable driver, especially on the return journey. The hillsides are cultivated everywhere. The precipitous slopes have been terraced with infinite labour, and orange and lemon groves surrounding pretty little lodges and cottages, only give way as one mounts higher to the grey-green of olive plantations.'.
