Gift inscribed by author on title page. The metaphor is sight or, ironically, ophthalmologist Nathan Kline's lack of it. Kline is one of those successful people who never quite becomes aware of the shallowness of his well-planned life, although he knows from his feelings of emptiness that something isn't right. Although Kline's midlife crisis is familiar territory, Susan Pashman skillfully develops the confusion inherent when all of the values held golden as part of the American dream--good looks, wealth, success, beautiful wife, two kids--appear to have no meaning. Yet Kline's steadfast denial traps him more thoroughly than mere socialization ever could.
