About this Item
Introduction by Carl Van Doren. Illustrations by Carlotta Petrina. 4to. Full natural linen with silver-lettered calf spine label and raised bands. 205pp. Numerous illustrations entirely in light blue. Near fine. Lacks slipcase. Lovely and tight copy of the tenth title in the LEC's third series. This bestselling novel (first published 1917) is set off the coast of Italy on a thinly-veiled Capri, where Douglas lived much of his life. Laid in is 12mo leaflet announcing a showing of Petrina's original "South Wind" drawings "arranged on the walls of the exhibition room of the Pynson Printers" in New York in the fall of 1932. Rear colophon notes limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #1018) signed by illustrator Petrina. Elmer Adler's odd design gives the appearance of having a half-title page only. NEWMAN 34.
