About this Item
Square 12mo. (104 x 104 mm), two joined sheets of thick handmade paper (no visible watermark, bottom edge deckle, others cut) folded concertina-style to form a leporello with wrapper (title and decoration on front cover, justification and decoration on rear cover) and 19 further leaves, overall 220 cm unfolded. Box handcrafted from heavy handmade off-white Khadi stock, 113 x 113 x 20 mm. Barbault's abstract illustration in watercolor and gouache and his manuscript text executed in black ink throughout, recto only. Limited to 30 numbered copies (this no. 5) made entirely by hand ("mise en page et orné à la main / un par un") and signed by Barbault on the justification. Fine condition. Issued as the seventh publication in the series Dix sur Dix, Barbault's charming hand-made book poses Erik Satie's Simple Question: "Que préférez-vous: La Musique ou la Charcuterie?" Satie's diatribe transcribed in manuscript on three pages rails against music in restaurants, bad taste, editors, the passing years and other bêtes noires. This item is rare. No examples of any issue from the series (each with 30 uniquely-executed copies) published by Les Éditions des Livres Faits Mains appear on booksellers' databases at the time of this posting. Examples from the series may be found on Bibliothèque Toulon, Les livres d'artistes, and Bibliothèque Department de l'Ariege, Les Valises de livres d'artistes. Seller Inventory # ABE-1578281748171
