Size of paper sheet: 10 1/2 in. x 7 3/8 in., pen & ink drawing of a man holding a child in front of a woman, who is carrying a pail; to the right is another, unfinished figure and a shovel (these have been partially scratched out by the artist), pin-holes in corners and lower edge; signed & dated by the artist in pencil in lower right: John Groth Russia '34. and number added in pencil: 1/2, some layout marks in pencil are also present, number penciled on back: 2888/20; paper surface shows some light, age-related tanning, light wear to edges. This appears to be a drawing from the drawing board, that might have been used sometime, in a more finished form, with other similar scenes. From the collection of bookseller/publisher, William (Bill) Targ (1907-99), who was one of John Groth's closest friends and admirers. Seller Inventory # ABE-560599488
