8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, slightly soiled. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed by the editor W. S. Lewis to Philip C. Jessup: "To Phil & Lois, with affection, from Lefty, August 1, 1973," on the front endpaper; accompanied by an autograph letter from Lewis to Jessup discussing travel arrangements. Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis, "Lefty" to his friends, was the general editor of the multi-volume "Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence." The recipients: Lois Walcott Kellogg Jessup worked tirelessly for the American Friends Service Committee, the U.S. Children's Bureau preparing reports on children in Europe during Second World War, and the United Nations, advocating for women's rights around the world. Philip Jessup, a United Nations ambassador at large and judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin.
