About this Item
Stitch bound foolscap 22 x 35cm. 19pp + (1)pp full-page map + (1)pp containing 4 "hypothetical sections" + (1)pp later typewritten sheet laid in titled "Notes - Antigua" with A. Beeby Thompson's stamp. Covers soiled. Interiors very good. Provenance - "With A. Beeby Thompson's Compliments / Photographs available" handwritten to the front, along with the stamp of the Geological Society of London. Extremely rare - just 1 copy located on Worldcat and Jisc at Kings College London. The inscription above indicates photos would have been made available upon request, and the KCL copy, which collates differently, includes 7 mounted b/w photos. Beeby Thompson (1873-1968) best known for his work on the Oil FIelds of Russia, played a pivotal role in the early development of the global oil industry. He visited Antigua during Dec 1920 - Jan 1921. His report covers topography, stratigraphy, petrology, water availability and quality, and concludes that with erratic rainfall, the only way to avoid water famine would be to impound large reserves, and construct wells. The map, "Leeward Islands Sketch Map of Antigua", presents geological zones, and the position of police stations, reefs, areas above water, and wells. The sections include Bendals and Blubber Valley. The loose sheet describes how Antigua experienced no problems until a severe drought in 1924, when (following Beeby Thompson's advice) a well was dug at Bendals, and another drought in July 1954 with 2 more wells dug.
