About this Item
Octavo, green boards and brown cloth lettered in white; worn pictorial dust jacket. First edition, presumed second printing, of Rau's first novel. A presentation copy, inscribed by Rau to Lois and Philip Jessup: "For Lois & Phil - This is my favorite of my books and I'm so delighted to share it with you, Santha," on the front endpaper. Lois Walcott Kellogg Jessup worked tirelessly for the American Friends Service Committee, the U.S. Children's Bureau (preparing reports on children in Europe during Second World War, and the United Nations, advocating for women's rights around the world. She married Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U. S. diplomat, credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. A moving presentation copy, linking the iconic diplomat Jessup with the distinguished Indian-born American author Rau, whose uncle served as India's representative to the United Nations.
