Add to basketGeorge F. Sandström (1925-2006) Plate 26 Watercolor, pencil, and gouache on artist board Signed lower left ca. 1980 Board size: 18 3/4 x 12 1/4 in. George F. Sandström (Argentinian/American, 1925-2006) was a natural history artist who illustrated over 40 books with his paintings of birds, animals, flowers, minerals, and plants over a long career. Born in Argentina in 1950, he immigrated to the United States. After several employment changes, he embarked on a career as a natural history artist in 1962. Sandström painted from his field sketches and photos, as well as borrowing stuffed specimens from museums. During the 1970s and 1980s, Sandström collaborated with John E. DuPont, naturalist, founder, and chairman of the Delaware Museum of Natural History in Wilmington, illustrating duPont s books Philippine Birds (1971), South Pacific Birds (1976) and Woodpeckers of the World (1982). These exquisite watercolors of woodpeckers were prepared for the 1982 publication Woodpeckers of the World. Sandstrom s watercolors represent a high point in modern natural history illustration, combining naturalistic compositions with meticulous attention to physical detail. Dean Amadon, commenting on these works in the foreword to the book, wrote: The success of artist George Sandstrom s labors will be evident to anyone who leafs through the plates. They permit an efficient comparison of woodpeckers, particularly of closely related species, often grouped on the same or adjacent plates, from all quarters of the globe… The woodpeckers, numbering about 200 species and found on all the significant landmasses except Australia, are a prominent and conspicuous family of birds, both to the ornithologist and the general public. Over the entire Northern Temperate region, woodpeckers, with a few exceptions, are among the very few small birds that are non-migratory. Their distinctive behavior and corresponding physical attributes have long captivated bird watchers and inspired artists, from Catesby to Audubon and beyond. Sandstrom s highly accomplished watercolors take their place in this artistic inspiration sequence and bear witness to a continuing fascination with these charming birds. Loca: 6.3B.D40.
