This is a Grosset & Dunlap reprint of Morley's first novel, a noted bibliomystery, in matching G&D dust jacket. This copy still carries the 1917 Doubleday, Page copyright, but really dates from about 1930. Signed in fountain pen to the FFE "for W.D. Vincent / Christopher Morley." Tipped-in opposite the title page is a typed letter dated January 8, 1932, on letterhead of the Saturday Review of Literature (listing Morley as "Contributing Editor" -- he was one of the publication's founders), addressed to W.D. Vincent at the Old Union Bank & Trust Co., Spokane, cheerfully chiding Vincent for sending his book for signing to Mr. Morley's summer address, since "the thrifty old United States government does not forward second-class mail." Letter also signed in ink by Morley with appended hand-written note "You see I am in the city for the winter." Morley, a Sherlock Holmes scholar who also helped found the Baker Street Irregulars, was one of the first judges of the Book-of-the-Month Club, continuing in that role till at least 1950. William D. Vincent, 1866-1935, was a prominent banker, amateur historian of the Pacific Northwest, and a noted collector of books and bookplates; his papers and bookplate collection are now held by the Libraries of the University of Washington . . . though obviously, this one somehow escaped. Bookplate of W.D. Vincent to the front pastedown. Intriguing association copy with TLS laid in. 190 pp. Reduced from $940. Seller Inventory # 004163
