About this Item
47 p. ; 21 1/2 cm. ; LC: F209.5 ; In blue printed wrapper ; "by James P. Simmons, Now of Norcross, Ga' ; OCLC: 367546673 ; "James P. Simmons, a noted author and a leader for years in Georgia politics. He was a member of the Secession Convention, in which body he was one of six delegates who signed the celebrated ordinance under formal protest"--Lucian Lamar Knight ; Sheriff M. V. Brand declared under oath in 1872 that James P Simmons supported the Ku-Klux Klan in Gwinnett County. "There is a preacher and lawyer there-James P. Simmons; we liked to have had a very bad difficulty over it. He accused me of miming down the Ku-Klux. He said the Ku Klux were better than any man who passed the law or tried to execute the law, meaning the Ku-Klux bill of Congress. That got me mad, and I spoke pretty short, I reckon; and I said he was one of the sort who were in favor of burning the courthouse. That made him mad, of course. He denied it, and we had some few words. He is a large landholder, and worth a great deal of money." ; With the stamp of James M. Mitchell, above the publisher ; it is highly likely that this James M Mitchell is the grandson of James P. Simmons, through his daughter, Eliza Thompson Terrell Simmons (1819 - 1895). It is unclear why his stamp appears on several copies of this treatise, the premise of which is for the proof of the pre-existence of the soul and its participation in the Fall of Man along with Michael and other angels ; on inside cover: "The original work of which this is a compendium, contains 314 pages 8vo, printed on fine tinted paper, and is neatly bound in cloth. It is sold by Claxton, Remsen & Haffelfinger, Philadelphia, and can be found at Phillips & Crew's, Atlanta, GA, and at book stores generally" ; scarce ; VG. Seller Inventory # 006729
