Add to basketONCE: POEMS, Alice Walker, softcover, signed, 1976 (1968). BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Signed by the poet on the title page. No signature or bookplate of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in good condition (some shelf rubbing of covers, edge wear, discolored spots). 8 x 5 1/4, 81 pages, 10 ounces XX This first volume of Alice Walker's poetry established her as a poet of unusual sensitivity and power. The poems reflect her experiences in the South, East Africa, and the world at large. Ms. Walker lived for a time with the Bugandans and the Kikuyus in Uganda and Kenya. Out of that episode comes the opening group of graceful and witty poems, images of Africa viewed by a black American. These are followed by poems - vivid, intense, direct - about the civil rights conflict in the South and by the long title poem, "Once." The final poems are about love. XX A sensitive, spirited, and intelligent poet. Feeling is channeled into a style that is direct and sharp. Wit and tenderness combine into humanity (Poetry magazine). Brief slashing poems - young, and in the sun (Muriel Rukeyser).
