George Rainbird Ltd, London. Vol I 1955, Vol II 1957. Also included is the Prospectus for Vol II. These are the low numbered editions which are bound in quarter vellum. Volume I is no 23. Copies numbered 1 -160 are signed by the artist & authors, printed on 'Amstel' Special mould made paper and bound in quarter vellum by Edward Hiscox of London. Vol II is no 104. Copies 1 - 160 are again signed by the artist & authors, printed on 'Amstel' Special mould made paper and bound in quarter vellum by Zaehnsdorf of London. Both copies come with their original slipcases. Vol I book condition: Very good. Vellum slightly soiled - mainly to spine edge. Some slight discolouration to the upper and lower edges of the boards with a small area of light marking (approx 4cms x 2cms) towards upper corner of front board. Gilt titles to spine slightly faded. Top edge gilt bright and clean. Internally very clean and free of foxing. Eight full page colour reproductions of paintings by Charles Raymond each with tissue guard. The tissue guard to frontispiece in Vol I has a light crease across each outer corner. Decorated endpapers with black & white copies of Charles Raymond's paintings. Vol II book condition: near fine. Some very slight soiling to vellum otherwise hardly any sign of wear. Internally very clean and bright and free of spotting. As with Vol I, there are eight full page colour reproductions of Charles Raymond's all tissue guarded. The tissue guard to the frontispiece has a light crease across the upper corner. Original green slipcase for Vol I in fair condition. Structurally sound though the fabric cover has split along the spine and shows some wear to the bottom edge. Generally a little rubbed with some soiling/marking to the rear. Slight mark to front cover. Pink title label a little creased to lower right corner and slightly soiled. Original red slipcase for Vol II in good condition. A little rubbing and light soiling. Yellow title label to front has a dark mark across upper right corner which also affects a small area of the slipcase front to either side of the label. The books are large folio size (approx 32cms wide x 43.5cms high) and are accompanied by the prospectus for Part 2 which contains a loose full page reproduction of R. Gallica Du Maitre D'Ecole by Charles Raymond. There is a small crease across the upper corner of this reproduction and some light but general wear & soiling mainly around the edges. Originally conceived as a six part set, sadly the production never got beyond these first two parts. An increasingly rare and a very beautiful find. Original Slipcases in fair & good condition.
