xxi, [3], 342, 391 p. 20 cm. A fold-out map at beginning of each section. 26 engravings in text. Full leather with gold impressing, including crest for Mr. Oliphant's School in Edinburgh. All edges gilt. Binding signed by Mackenzie. Marbled endpapers. School prize bookplate on front pastedown. Corners bumped. Foxing to first pages. Still a very pretty book. Scottish church missionaries have at different times been active in the Near East. The earliest and one of the most remarkable initiatives was this "mission of inquiry" to Palestine undertaken on behalf of the Church of Scotland by a group which included Bonar and M'Cheyne. The mission was inspired by a contemporary renewal of interest in the Jewish people. Seller Inventory # 124104
